about.
Exploring structural abstraction through object manipulation, Alissa Blackshaw’s recent practice investigates repurposing the mundane; playfully disguising materials in the form of awkward, often unusual animalistic beings. Her work typically expresses the familiar within unfamiliar contexts, she interrogates unlikely material relationships to discover what is unknown. Blackshaw’s practice has transcended from her intricate print-making to her absurd sculptural formations. Recycled engine oil is a primary medium that she enjoys experimenting with; like her sculptures, its abject and free-formed nature is susceptible to a multitude of interpretation.
